After the operation

Once the treatment is finished, it’s time for the moment everyone looks forward to: recovery. At Instituto Clavel we accompany our patients during this process to achieve the best results.

We encourage each patient to get back their quality of life as soon as possible

Although the recovery process is the stage of treatment that patients most look forward to, they also have lots of questions about it, especially about the process after leaving the hospital. For this reason, at Instituto Clavel we attach great importance to this phase in our PER program, in which we encourage the patient to be fully involved.

Getting treatment from the best medical professionals is essential, but for a quick and effective recovery, it is also essential that those professionals stand by you once the treatment is over.
We want our patients to feel supported not only during the hospital stay, but also after they are home, helping them to take control.

To do this, we have established the following system:

  • The medical team will visit the patient daily during their hospital stay.
  • Patients begin to move about as soon as possible, by 6 hours after surgery at the latest.
  • The patient gets out of bed to begin physical therapy exercises before 12 hours have passed since the surgery, as long as the doctor advises it and the patient is able to tolerate it.
  • Anteroposterior (AP) and lateral x-rays are taken with the EOS scanner 48 hours after surgery, for the cases that require it.
  • Accompaniment and information during your hospital discharge. We make sure that the patient has the necessary information and materials to continue their recovery at home.
  • We tell the patient what they need to do after hospital discharge to care for themselves, and explain the follow-up process.
  • We closely monitor the patient’s pain levels.
  • Inspection of the surgical wound by a member of our nursing team, about 7-10 days after surgery.
  • Gradual withdrawal of medication.
  • First appointment with IC Rehabilitation for rehabilitation: explanation of the protocol and number of weekly sessions required for the patient. These are fully personalized, depending on the type of surgery and the assessment made before surgery.
  • In-person evaluation with the medical team at 6 weeks after surgery.
  • A flexo-extension lumbar x-ray is taken 3 months after surgery to check the mobility of the prosthesis and rule out malpositions or unwanted effects.
  • Follow-up by phone or email from the medical team, at 3, 6, and 12 months after the surgery.
  • Before surgery and during patient follow-up, patient satisfaction is measured using the following quality of life scales: EQ-5D, EQ-VAS and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI).

To facilitate the process, we make various communication channels available to the patient. In this way, they can ask any questions by phone or email, which will be answered within 24 hours. They can also send evidence or photos of the wound to help us remotely advise them more effectively.

We follow an itinerary of steps to guarantee the best experience for our patients during surgery. From accompaniment by our staff before anesthesia and during the time in reanimation, to giving detailed information about every aspect of the process, to including the patient’s family.
